A day of sculptures

Looking for a day trip out of Auckland?

We spent last Sunday doing two Sculptures trails at Snells Beach and Matakana, an hour’s drive north of Auckland.

Started the day with a sumptuous lunch at The Glass House, the spectacular home of Brick Bay Wines and gateway to the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail.

Brick Bay showcases contemporary sculpture created by some of the most exciting artists working in New Zealand today.  The trail shows a dynamic exhibition of large-scale sculpture set in a stunning natural environment featuring native trees, wildlife and ponds bursting with waterlilies.  It was a beautiful relaxing walk (some steps) which took slightly over an hour to view 68 sculptures.

Making the most out of the trip, we visited the newly opened Scultureum just a short drive outside Matakana.

Trip Advisor listed Sculptureum as the No. 1 ‘Best Thing To Do’ in Auckland.No. 1 ‘Best Thing To Do’ in Auckland.

A world of art, food and wine designed to inspire, uplift and amuse everyone who passes through.

The three gardens are bursting with sculptures, prehistoric rocks, live animals and reflective quotes all surrounded by colorful plantings that change with the seasons.

On the way back, we visited Charlie’s gelato for a lovely treat.  I had a double scope of mango and blueberry and absolutely love them.

Big scopes indeed!

Drop by and find out why the judges raved about it!
